| Spain
Spain is a country that evokes rich images – bullfights, flamenco, fiesta
and pictures of its proud and noble history. The country has been one of
Europe’s most important historical and cultural centres, today, as well
as over the years. Spain is made up of several regions – namely Asturias,
Andalusia, the Balearic Islands, the Basque, Aragon, Cantabria, the Canary
Islands, Castilla La Mancha, Catalonia, Castillay Leon, Extremadura, Madrid,
Galicia, Murcia, La Rioja, Navarra, and the Valencian Community.
Spain is the country with the second largest number of UNESCO World
Heritage sites in the world, including San Cristóbal de La Laguna,
Ávila, Cáceres, Ibiza, Alcalá de Henares, Cordoba,
Toledo, Cuenca, Tarragona, Mérida, Segovia, Salamanca and Santiago
de Compostela.
Spain is famous for bullfighting, an essential part of fiesta. Spaniards
consider bullfighting more of an art than a sport, and the skilled toreadors
are much respected in the country. This is a tradition that has been a
part of Spanish culture since the 18th century, when Francisco Romero established
some of bullfighting’s rules. Bullfighting is called la corrida in Spanish.
Flamenco is typical of Spain, a fascinating art form from Andalusia
in Southern Spain that is full of colour and style. The art of flamenco
consists of three forms – cante or song, baile or dance and guitarra or
playing the guitar. The Romany people played a significant part in the
creation and development of flamenco but the art has also been enhanced
by other influences such as that of the famous Tartessos, and the Muslims
who ruled the country for seven hundred years.
Travelers to the country should have at least a smattering of Spanish,
as very few people speak any other language.
Spain is a marvelous place for a vacation. There is a host of things
to see, marvels of architecture to appreciate, great food and wine to enjoy
and wonderful beaches to relax on.
