Lisbon

The capital of Portugal, and the country’s largest city, Lisbon is a delightful place for travelers of all kinds. With great hotels, marvelous beaches, superb shopping, a range of tourist attractions and remarkable food and wine, Lisbon offers something for everyone. The climate here is pleasant too, with sunny summers, mild autumns and rainy winters. Snow is very rare here.

Lisbon’s location on seven small hills near a river has always attracted traders and settlers, resulting in a cultural diversity that is as charming as the relaxed attitude of the people here.

There are beautiful beaches in Lisbon, including the ones at Cascais and Estoril. This is an attractive city, with broad roads bordered by shady trees and full of buildings in an Art nouveau style, as well as churches with spires and domes. Generally, the architecture here is well worth a second look.
There are very good museums in Lisbon, such as the National Museum of Contemporary Art, the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum, the Carmo Archaeological Museum and the National Coach Museum. There’s interesting nightlife too, particularly at Bairro Alto.
Shopping is great here, too. You can check out Centro Commercial Colombo, which is the largest mall in the Iberian Peninsula, or if you’re looking for native products, go to the interesting market at the Campo de Santa Clara.
Other things to do include seeing the ancient areas of Alfama, Castelo and Mouraria, St. George's Castle, and the churches São Vicente de Fora and Santa Engrácia.

The transportation in Lisbon is quite unusual. Since there are many ups and downs here, the three funiculars used in the city - Elevador da Lavra, Elevador da Glória, and Elevador da Bica - are particularly useful. Besides, there are still trams in use that date from the nineteen thirties.

Some of the sights that visitors to Lisbon shouldn’t miss include the Bairro Alto, great for nightlife and a good place to hear fado, Portugal’s national music; the beautifully designed Gare do Oriente; and Belém, a historic locality containing the Belém Tower and the famous monastery, Mosteiro dos Jeronimos.
