| Düsseldorf
One of the loveliest cities in Germany, Düsseldorf is located on
the banks of the Rhine River. Sophisticated and modern, Düsseldorf
is the capital of the North-Rhine Westphalia state.
The old town or Altstadt of Düsseldorf is fascinating, full of
narrow alleys, tall, slender townhouses and churches. There are an amazing
260 pubs on the famous Königsallee, many with their own special home
brews. Königsallee is called the longest bar in the world! It’s full
of designer boutiques and great shops, too. Düsseldorf’s Baroque architecture
is beautiful, and there are a host of medieval, theatre, contemporary and
natural history museums to explore, as well as interesting boutique stores.
Museums such as the Goethe Museum, the Heinrich-Heine-Institut, Kunsthalle
Düsseldorf, Museum of European Garden Design and the German Museum
of Ceramics are well worth a visit.
Düsseldorf’s Altbier is a dark beer, made only in this region.
This is extremely popular, as are the typical liqueurs Killepitsch and
Samtkragen. The special food here includes Rheinischer Sauerbraten, which
is pickled horsemeat or beef, Düsseldorfer Senfrostbraten or mustard
steak and black pudding or Himmel und Ähd. Rhenish mussels are a winter
specialty. Düsseldorf’s renowned mustard is served in a traditional
container called a Mostertpöttche. An economic hub, Düsseldorf
is famous for the various events and trade fairs that are held here every
year. Düsseldorf’s international airport is one of the three largest
in the country and is only ten minutes away from the conference and exhibition
venues.
The city doesn’t lag behind in cultural matters either – Düsseldorf
is home to the Komödie Düsseldorf, Theater an der Kö, the
Deutsche Opera am Rhein and the Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus, which
dates from 1585. The two hundred year old Benrath Castle is a major tourist
attraction with its stucco ceilings, magnificent ballroom and objects of
interest such as rare works of art, chandeliers and mirrors.
Charming and full of life, Düsseldorf is a great holiday destination. |
