Stockholm
Stockholm which is the capital of Sweden is also the biggest city out
of all the islands. It is situated on the eastern coast near the Baltic
Sea. Fourteen islands make up the heart of the city and form an archipelago.
The government is located here as is the parliament and the home of the
Monarch of Sweden. Beginning in the Thirteenth Century, Stockholm has been
the heart of politics and economics. Stockholm has grown to be so large
it is the biggest municipality having almost two million residents.
Architecture is still in the style of Thirteenth and Fifteenth century
but has areas of modern and trendy designs. The modern flair of décor
and architecture started around the Thirties and has continued to change
with the times.
The museums in Stockholm are not a scarce commodity offering visitors
their choice of seventy museums that take in nine million guests each year.
The Natural Museum is the most famous and houses an extreme collection
of over 46,000 objects of art and handmade crafts. Picasso is one of the
artists that will be seen in Stockholm art galleries. The Royal Swedish
Opera was founded in 1773. The best known theatre in Stockholm is the Royal
Dramatic Theatre. Many others run at the same time offering a great show
or production to enjoy while here on vacation.
The climate in Stockholm is normally of humid conditions. The seasons
are very clearly defined into winter and summer. In winter, the cool, dreary
days are only six hours long whereas the warm summer days and cool nights
are extended to eighteen hours long. The temperature never goes above eighty
degrees and never lowers than twenty-five degrees. Rainfall in Stockholm
comes mainly in the warmer months with snow in the winter reaching a total
of 21 inches year round precipitation.
