Munich
Its rich historic past and very colourful present makes Munich a very
interesting town for visitors. The city was officially established in 1175
and since then has been witness to a series of historic happenings. For
the visitor, Munich has something for everyone, irrespective of their age
and tastes. There are historic monuments, gardens, modern buildings, fabulous
shopping areas, top quality restaurants and pubs at ones disposal. Some
of the places of interest are:
The Allianz Arena – This arena was finished in 2005 and is a spectacular
display of modern architecture and technology. It can seat 69,000 people
and has a field that is 8,000 sqm. The membrane shell of the arena is the
biggest of its kind in the world. The most interesting aspect of the arena
is the lighting of its façade. The façade lights up in the
colours of the two teams, depending on which team is playing.
Hofbräuhaus – The long standing beer hall that has been in existence
since 1644. Beer, music, food and tourists is all one will find here.
The English Garden – This is the most famous park in Munich. It covers
about 900 acres and is covered with brooks, swans and shaded paths. The
park also houses the beer gardens that it is famous for. There are four
of these gardens. The park runs across half the city from its centre to
the northern border.
Nymphenburg Palace – The palace with its pavilions and parks is a must
see for all visitors. This ancient palace with it baroque architecture
is located in western Munich and has been the summer residences of five
generations of Bavarian Monarchs. While visiting this famous palace one
must also be sure to visit the Botanical Garden, the Museum Mensch und
Natur, the Porcelain Museum and the Marstall Museum. Apart from these Munich
also has its fair share of festivals like the Oktoberfest.
