| Cape Town
Currently the second largest city in South Africa, topped only by Johannesburg
in recent years, Cape Town has the recognition as one of the most beautiful
settings in the world. With a stunning backdrop of the 12 Apostles
mountain range, Cape Point, and Table Mountain, the scenic beauty is hard
to ignore.
The city has been drawing visitors since the mid 1600s when it served
as a supply station for Dutch sailing ships headed for Eastern Africa,
India and the Far East. Various nations have had involvement in the growth
and development of the city, beginning with the Dutch and followed by France,
Great Britain, and other nations intent upon profitable trade routes and
extension of the empire. The discovery of diamonds added to the importance
of the area.
The economic importance of the city has continued to grow, thanks to
the boom in tourism and real estate. At the same time, the city struggles
with continuing problems of crime, HIV/AIDS, and drug-related violence.
Tourists are drawn to the city both for its spectacular natural attractions,
such as Table Mountain and the local beaches, but as a gateway to the interior
of the country. Shopping opportunities exist in such facilities as the
Victoria and Albert Waterfront complex. The Two Oceans Aquarium is
a popular destination, as are visits to colonies on seal and Duiker Islands.
Cape Town also boasts a staggering array of architectural delights of
the Colonial Dutch style. Visitors can take part in festivals such
as the Cape Town Minstrel Carnival, or enjoy the nightlife scene structured
for people of all preferences and tastes. Visitors can also choose from
many types of international cuisine in the many restaurants, cafes and
dining facilities scattered throughout the city.
A day spent visiting any of the beaches frequented by locals followed
by a night on the town is a sure way to relax and get to know the city
of Cape Town.
