| Amsterdam
The mesmerizing city of Amsterdam is Netherlands’
pride. The idyllic situation of the city on the banks of two bodies of
water, the IJ bay and the Amstel River make it an enchanting city. The
city derives its name “Amste-r-dam” from its situation where the small
bifurcated Amstel River joins a sluice dam, originally built in 1240.
Founded as a fishing village in the 12th century,
today Amsterdam has grown into a marvelous city, ranked as the largest
city and official capital of Netherlands. Amsterdam is also the cultural
and financial hub of Netherlands.
“Venice of the North” is also Amsterdam, on account
of the series of 17th century concentric semi-circular canals (grachten)
dug around the old city centre. Alongside the canals, one can find several
fine houses and mansions. The canals are among the major attractions of
the city. Amsterdam prides itself to be among the most sought after
tourist destinations of the world and has something to offer to every traveler’s
tastes. Gorgeous architectures, captivating canals, beautiful mansions,
posh hotels, great shopping malls , fine bars and restaurants and a vibrant
nightlife ( has a red light district itself) beckons every tourist
to Amsterdam.
One of the largest historic centers in Europe
is also in Amsterdam. Amsterdam boasts of about 7000 historic buildings
and has five fine churches in the historic centre. Mediaeval wooden houses,
canal houses and mansions, Begiinhof etc.are among the Architectural heritage
of this great City.
Amsterdam is also a destination that you can visit
all year around. The climate in the City is one of moderate temperature.
During winters, one can experience a mixture of mild, cold, frostily freezing,
and chilly temperatures. Summers on the other hand are warm but seldom
hot. The precipitation levels annually is less than 760 mm and rain falls
are generally protracted drizzle or light rain. In the cooler months particularly,
cloudy and damp days are common.
